Jeff Clements has been an invaluable resource in the amendment campaign, having published an important book on the subject and co-founding the group Free Speech for People that has helped spread a strong message to every corner of the country. It was a pleasure finally meeting and working with Jeff at the J17 event at NYU this past Saturday (see previous post). The passion in his prose is equaled by his precision and breadth of knowledge in person. And there can be no better indicator that his efforts are beginning to pay dividends than the news that emerged from Capitol Hill this week.
“Tuesday, January 22 — U.S. Rep. Jim McGovern (D-MA) today introduced two Constitutional amendments to overturn the Supreme Court’s decision in the Citizens United case, which unleashed a flood of corporate and special interest money into the American political system.
HJ Res 21 would overturn Citizens United and put a stop to the growing trend of corporations claiming first amendment rights. This ‘People’s Rights Amendment’ not only addresses corporate rights as they pertain to campaign finance, but is broader in scope to clarify that corporations are not people with Constitutional rights.”
You can read the full story on the FSFP website, which also includes links to the PDF files of the actual resolutions introduced. And, of course, our evaluation of the full proposal, including both resolutions, will be posted as soon as possible.
