Credo Action sent a fundraising email today that included pictures of their new “Overturn Citizens United” t-shirt. Here’s the problem:
It’s clever but why does it need to be partisan? Sure, it’s obvious that the Republican leadership is in deeper with corporate priorities but not so much more than Democrats that it’s a slam dunk. And the whole point of a movement to adopt an amendment to overturn Citizens United is to win converts, not piss them off. We need to leverage all 80% of the support we have to overturn Citizens United and that includes, by definition, registered Republicans.
If you want to score political points, use Citizens United to raise money and, ultimately, lose, this is a great way to do it. But if you want to build a grassroots movement that actually has a chance to win, leave the elephants (and donkeys, for that matter) off the t-shirts.
Your cooperation is appreciated.
